May Classroom- Come On Man, Two More Weeks!

It happens every year as a teacher. May comes and the teachers and students are wore out from 155-160 days of school and we all see the end near. The teachers are tired and worn down from the day to day battles in the classroom and the students are done. They are tired of English, Math, Science, PE, Reading, Writing and playing sports. We all hit a wall about the end of April and see the end near and when that happens it is easy to stop what you are doing and just cruise on in to the finish line. I must admit I have done both of what I am going to say below at the near end of a school year. Obviously, the second option more so than the first as it is my duty and job to prepare my students for exams and life after school.

Option one- Go into May cruise control and just let the kids be quiet, play on their computers and chill out for the last several weeks of school. Admittedly, this is the easy way out and one that is often taken by many teachers. Both parties are tired and done. Both are just wanting school to end and the summer time to begin. The kids have spring fever and the weather is changing. The seniors are prepping to graduate and move forward in life and mostly could care less. This is the preferred way the students like that last few weeks of school but the Admin team does not seem to be a big fan of the thought process.

Option Two- Go into May wide open knowing that the end is near and exams are coming. Teach just as hard as you did during the school year and get the kids ready to try and pass exams. Take the time to review everything they will see and allow them to get prepped for exams. Exams are not my favorite part of teaching and I have never taught to a test. I do not think they are needed as a measure of a students true performance or retention of information. But the admin team, local and state districts are stuck in the past and think these are true measure of student success.

So the choice is up to you and your kids. Are they going to be in cruise control or going hard to the end. I prefer a combination of both as it winds down. My plan is to engage the kids as long as I can get them to buy in and give them some time for themselves as well. It all comes down to classroom management and how your students behave in the process. If you have them in line then May will never be an issue. If you do not then it may be a long “May” for those involved.
